Two side publications of the World Water Development Report 3 released on the occasion of the 5th World Water Forum

Two side publications were released by UNESCO-WWAP on the occasion of the World Water Forum in Istanbul in March, 2009, in conjunction with World Water Development Report 3: Water in a Changing World. They represent the first of what will become an ongoing series of scientific papers, insight reports and dialogue papers that will continue to provide more in-depth or focused information on water–related topics and issues. More.

The Scientific Paper Climate Changes, Water Security and Possible Remedies for the Middle East, by Jon Martin Trondalen, for UNESCO-PCCP, explores the relationship between climate change and water vulnerability, looking more closely at the Middle East – it also indicates some remedies in certain selected cases. The Dialogue Paper Updating the International Water Events Database, by Aaron T. Wolf et al., for UNESCO-PCCP, describes the use of event data in the assessment of hydropolitical relations, and investigates reported events of conflict and co-operation in relation to international water resources over the last 60 years. UNESCO and Internews’ Earth Journalism Network organize a training for journalists on "How to improve communication and media reporting on water and cooperation?" during the 5th World Water Forum

A training for journalists on "How to improve communication and media reporting on water and cooperation?", organized by UNESCO and Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, was held from 15 to 21 March 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The training aimed at preparing journalists from all over the world on water and environmental issues prior to the 5th World Water Forum in Istanbul. It also aimed at enabling them to train other journalists in their countries after the training, as well as to engage and inform policy-makers, vulnerable communities and other news consumers about the importance and urgency of turning diverging interests over water resources into actual cooperation.

The journalists – representing media organizations from China, India, Nigeria, Mexico, Egypt, Turkey and Zambia – first took part in a workshop on "Turning Water Conflict into Cooperation" which culminated with a panel discussion that included water experts from different countries. The participants’ training continued during the whole week with practical exercises. They fulfilled their journalist’s mission for the duration of the Forum with the support and help of UNESCO’s water experts.

The training, part of UNESCO’s initiative on "Media as Partners" on media capacity building, was supported by UNESCO’s Science and Communication & Information programs, including: the International Hydrological Program, the PCCP program on preventing and resolving water conflicts, and the inter-sectoral platforms fostering dialogue and mutual understanding and education for sustainable development.
