PCCP participates in a conference on "Greening Borders: cooperation, security and diplomacy"

PCCP participated in a working conference organized by the University of San Diego on "Greening Borders: cooperation, security and diplomacy". The aim of the conference was to bring global insights to controversies related to water justice and hydro-diplomacy in San Diego –Tijuana border region. The event was held from 18 to 20 November at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, University of San Diego, California, USA.

PCCP chairs a workshop on "Benefit Sharing and Transboundary Waters" during the World Water Week

PCCP chaired a workshop on behalf of the UN-Water Task Force on Transboundary Waters during the World Water Week. The topic of the workshop was "Benefit Sharing and Transboundary Waters". This event was held on 18 August in Stockholm, Sweden.

UNESCO's Natural and Social and Human Sciences Sectors organize a meeting on the human right to water jointly with UNESCO Etxea-UNESCO Centre Basque Country

UNESCO's Social and Human Sciences and Natural Sciences Sectors, jointly with UNESCO Etxea-UNESCO Centre Basque Country, organized an experts' meeting on the right to water on 7-8 July 2009 in Paris, France.

The main purpose of the meeting was to bring together international experts to discuss and develop recommendations on the right to water and access to sanitation, which are presented in a booklet released in October 2009 during UNESCO's 35th General Conference.

PCCP participated in an event jointly organized by The American Library in Paris and WICE World Watch on "Water and War – Are wars really going to be fought over water?". The event was held on 28 May 2009 at The American Library in Paris.

PCCP participates in a symposium on "the geostrategic consequences of global warming"

PCCP participated in a symposium on "the geostrategic consequences of global warming", organized by the French Joint Forces Defence College (CID). The symposium was held on 9 April 2009 at the Ecole Militaire, Paris.

UNESCO and INBO coordinate Topic 3.1. on basin management and transboundary cooperation at the Fifth World Water Forum

On 20 and 21 March 2009 UNESCO and INBO coordinated the five sessions on 'Basin Management and Transboundary Cooperation' of Theme 3 'Managing and Protecting Water Resources and their Supply Systems to Meet Human and Environmental Needs' at the Fifth World Water Forum, Istanbul, Turkey.

UNESCO organized a high-level roundtable event on the World Water Day 2009 with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN-Water Secretariat. The topic of the roundtable was "Adapting to Climate Variability in Transboundary Basins". This roundtable was held on 22 March 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey.

UNESCO-IHP, the Chirac Foundation and the French Development Agency team up for conference on water and peace

The conference on "Water for Peace – Peace for Water: Lessons from the Past and Current Challenges", jointly organized by UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme and the Fondation Chirac, with the support of AFD (Agence Française de Développement), addressed these issues with 2 roundtables, on 13 November 2008.

PCCP participates in a seminar on "tense water resources management: beyond public goods-economic goods' divides"

PCCP was invited to address a seminar on "tense water resources management: beyond public goods-economic goods' divides", on the occasion of the release of Alexandre Thaite's book 'Is Water a Right or a Good?''. The seminar, organized by the Delegation for Strategic Affairs of the French Ministry of Defence, was held on 6 November 2008 at the Ecole Militaire, Paris.

"Transboundary Water Management" Symposium to address water scarcity leading to increased competition among users

The symposium was held from 15th to 18th October 2008 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Water: A Catalyst for Peace Conference Interactive Role-play and Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques

Zaragoza, 6-8 October

UNESCO's PCCP project hosted an innovative international role-play conference gathering more than 150 water professionals, decision-makers and diplomats, representatives of civil society, educators and post-graduate students, from 41 countries, for 3 days of intensive debate. The role-play format proved to be an excellent, constructive and engaging means for teaching and awareness-building of Alternative Dispute Resolution Techniques in water management.

From Conflict to Cooperation in International Water Resources Management: Challenges and Opportunities

Delft, 20 – 22 November

UNESCO, in collaboration with Green Cross International, organized an international conference that brought together more than 160 participants. One of its targets was to reflect on the results of the same year’s World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg and its impact on sustainable transboundary water management. It aimed to deepen the knowledge about the roots of conflicts and to achieve a better understanding of co-operation mechanisms and conflict resolution tools. At the same time, the keynote presentations, panel discussions, individual paper presentations and open debate sessions were planned to produce ideas to initiate the second phase of the PCCP project.
