Real world water conflicts were considered through a number of case studies. They draw lessons from both the root causes of such conflicts as well as from examples of successful co-operation in shared water resources management. The case study reports are authored by experts involved in the management of the basins in questions.
The case studies provide an important summary of data related to the hydrology of the river basins, in addition to substantial information on the historical management of the water resources. The legal, political and economical aspects, which make every case unique, were also analysed and assessed.
The aim of the project in its future phases is to increase the number of case studies and to involve a larger number of players in the preparation of these exercises. In 2001-2003, the basins that were given attention within the PCCP (UNESCO) this component of the programme are the following:
the Aral Sea;
the Columbia;
the Incomati;
the Jordan;
the Mekong;
the Nile;
the Rhine; and
the Trifinio Plan.
