Targets

United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, Agenda 21, 1992:
'Both formal and non-formal education are indispensable to changing people's attitudes so that they have the capacity to assess and address their sustainable development issues.'

International Conference on Water and the Environment, Dublin Statement, 1992:
'Awareness raising is a vital part of a participatory approach to water resources management. Information, education and communication support programmes must be an integral part of the development process.'

Millennium Development Goals, 2000:
'Ensure that, by 2015, all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling.'
'Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.'

Primary school

   - Today, 79% of the world's children aged 6 to 11 are enrolled in primary school.
   - Number of children of primary-school age who do not have access to education: 113 million.
   - 60% of these are girls.
   - 4 out of 10 primary-age children in sub-Saharan Africa do not attend school.

What is...?
