(International Association of Hydrological Sciences)

IAHS Prepares for Rabat

The big event on the horizon for IAHS is the Fifth Scientific Assembly of the Association to be held in Rabat, Morocco, from 23 April to 3 May 1997.

The Scientific Assembly will be held in the Conference Centre of the Ministry of Public Works, in Hay Riad, Rabat. The Conference Centre has a pleasant setting of buildings and gardens, and is equipped with all the necessary amenities, including air conditioned halls. It is 20 minutes away by bus from the city centre. A continuous service of shuttle buses will allow easy

transit between the Conference Centre and city. The Assembly will be hosted by the Moroccan Water Resources Association. Similar to previous Scientific Assemblies, the registration fees will cover a free copy of one of the symposium volumes, and there will be reduced fees for student participants. A broad range of lodging options and prices will be provided to suit various preferences. A program of city and country tours will be available.

The Second Circular, to be published in October 1996,will contain the final program and registration forms.

The Scientific Program includes six Symposia (each lasting between 1 and 3 days) and five Workshops (each lasting 1 days):

ICID

(International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage)

NETWORKING IN IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE

Bringing Professionals Together

The International Programme for Technology Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) was launched in 1991 in the priority themes of modernisation of irrigation and drainage systems, ensuring sustainability of land and water use, improving technologies for maintenance. One of the most important components of the programme, is networking, which is intended to ensure that the technological research is relevant, effectively carried out, avoids duplication, and is readily applied in the field. To bring the professionals, expecially in the developing countries, together, IPTRID network was established and is coordinated by HR Wallingford, (UK); ILRI (Wageningen, The Netherlands); CEMAGREF (Montpellier, France); ICID (New Delhi, India); USER (Denver, USA) and IPTRID Secretariat (World Bank, Washington, D.C., USA).

The International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI), The Netherlands, like the IPTRID Network Station has created a Drainage Information System called DRAIN, using DCS/ISI software to help professionals in developing countries to gain access to relevant technical information. DRAIN contains several databases on addresses of institutions, experts, details of training courses and activities, research projects, grey literature, and computer models. This ILRI-IPTRID Network and Information Centre provides Question and Answer services through the DRAIN software and on-line access to the databases AGRALIN, CABI, AGRICOLA, AGRIS, and SOILCD selective dissemination of information; and document delivery. All the professionals interested in utilising the facility provided by ILRI are encouraged to do so and also contribute information on the themes of drainage, health and irrigation by writing at the following address:
