(1) In remote sensing: ability of an entire remote sensor system, including lens, antennae, display, exposure, processing and other factors, to render a sharply defined image. It may be expressed in line pairs per millimetre or metre, or in many other manners.

(2) Of instruments: smallest change in a physical variable which causes a variation in the response of a measuring system.
