The purpose of the conference is to review current trends in preserving and disseminating documentary heritage materials and promote professional cooperation among all Memory of the World Programme stakeholders including librarians, archivists, sound and film archivists, historians, publishers, multimedia experts and scientists.

Papers may address:

  • significant contributions to all aspects of preservation and dissemination of archives and library heritage materials

  • how such contributions would relate to the Memory of the World Programme.

As in the First International Memory of the World Conference, active participation in the conference is very much encouraged. Participants will include a cross-section of all competent professional communities from all parts of the world.

  • One of the highlights of the Conference will be a session devoted to project proposals and their matching with potential funding sources represented at the Conference. Participants from developing countries are therefore very much encouraged to bring, in paper and electronical form, project proposals.

  • Another major issue will be to formulate strategies and to draw media attention in as many countries as possible to the importance of the issues addressed by the Memory of the World Programme and the need to preserve the documentary memory of these countries.
Additionally, we encourage participants who are submitting papers to include:
  • significant results from preservation and access projects;
  • new research concepts, techniques and perspectives;
  • issues crossing traditional subdisciplinary boundaries;
  • funding and marketing strategies;
  • ideas to enhance the visibility and implementation of the Memory of the World Programme in developing countries with particular attention to the Caribbean and the Latin American countries.
Papers to be submitted preferably in an electronic form as follows:
  • an abstract (max. 1000 words) - to be submitted not later than 15 June 2000;
  • complete paper (max 4 pages A4) - to be submitted not later than 30 June 2000 to:
