First meeting of the Regional Committee 14 -16 June, Pachuca, Mexico
The First meeting of the Regional Committee was hosted by the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo, in Pachuca, Mexico. About 20 experts from the Latin America and the Carribbean attended the meeting, including 9 members of the Committee and a few observers from Mexico reviewed the development of the "Memory of the World" Programme in the region and made recommendations for improved conservation and digitization of and access to documentary heritage.
During the Regional Committee meeting Maria Elena Porras, Ecuador, was elected as Chairperson and Lourdès Blanco, Venezuela, as rapporteur.
Preservation and access in Latin America:
The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to review preservation and access conditions in the Region and draw lessons for future collaboration. Country reports were prepared by all participants. Each Committee member will co-ordinate work in his/her sub-region. New nominations for the "Memory of the World" Register at national, regional and international level will be initiated together with national and regional project proposals. The archives of the Political Police in Paraguay and the archives of the Operation Condor were mentioned in this context.
Pachuca Declaration:
The Committee adopted a declaration pledging the commitment of participants:
- to promote and ensure by the most appropriate technology the preservation of documentary heritage of international, regional and national significance;
- to raise Member States awareness of their own documentary heritage especially the part of it which holds significance in terms of common regional memory;
- to formulate and adopt national strategies which allow to define, safeguard and give access to the regional documentary heritage;
- to propose mechanisms in favour of co-operation and mutual exchange of knowledge between professionals of preservation of the historical documentary heritage.
