 I am very pleased to welcome you at the doors of the Island of Gorée's Slave Museum.
Very soon, you will experience a place haunted by the memories of the millions of men and women who have passed; men and women torn from their homes and used to irrigate with their blood the fields of more prosperous nations.
At the dawn of the 3rd millenium, information technologies allow people of the world to visit our museum in Senegal, at least virtually, and witness for themselves this painful chapter in the history of mankind.
My hope is that this site contributes to making more people visit our museum, and that the pilgrimage to the Island of Gorée provides an impetus to an enhanced brotherhood able to exorcise the demons of the past. It is with the great pleasere that I welcome this initiative of the Regional UNESCO Office of Dakar in cooperation with a Senegalese NGO within the framework of UNESCO's mission of education and awareness raising, to promote a more united world founded on mutual respect and cultural diversity.
